John Donne’s Biography

1. John Donne was born on 22 January 1572 in London, England.

2. John Donne was born into a prosperous Roman Catholic family (when England was strong anti-Catholic).

3. John Donne was an English poet and cleric in  the Church of England.

4. John Donne was a metaphysical poet.

5. He entered Oxford University at age 11 and  later the University of Cambridge, but never received degrees, due to his Catholicism. 

6. John Donne was forced to leave the Oxford University without a degree because of his religion.

7. He studied law and theology.

8. John Donne was briefly sent to prison for secretly marrying with his patron’s niece Anne More.

9. John Donne is well known for his songs and sonnets, satire, the elegies and sermons.

10. In 1615, at the age of 42, Donne accepted ordination in the Anglican Church.

11. He died in  1631.

 

SWEETEST LOVE, I DO NOT GOE EXPLANATION

Stanza-1

Sweetest Love, I do not goe,

For wearinesse of thee,

Nor in the hope the world can show

A fitter Love for mee;

But since that I

Must dye at last, 'tis best,

To use my selfe in jest

Thus by fain'd deaths to dye.

EXPLANATION: In the first stanza of this poem the poet says, "Sweetest love, I’m not going because I’m tired of you, nor in the hope that I’ll find a better love out there, but since I will eventually die, it’s best to amuse myself by dying feigned deaths."

जॉन डन 1611 में जर्मनी की यात्रा पर जा रहें होते है । शादी के बाद पहली बार अपनी पत्नी से अलग हो रहे है । जॉन डन और ऐनी मोर की शादी 1601 में हुई थी । जब जॉन डन जर्मनी जा रहे होते है, उस समय जर्मनी में युद्ध का मौहाल था इसलिए उनकी पत्नी जॉन डन को वहां जाने से माना करती है साथ ही जॉन डन की पत्नी को ऐसा लगता है कि जॉन डन उससे ऊब चुके है इसलिए युद्ध के समय भी वो जर्मनी जा रहे है । लेकिन जॉन डन अपनी पत्नी को दिलासा दिलाते है । जॉन डन और उनकी पत्नी में जो बातचीत हुई, जॉन डन ने उसे एक कविता का रूप दे दिया जिसे हम लोग “Sweetest Love I Do Not Goe” के नाम से जानते है | इसके पहले छंद (stanza) में कवि कहता है कि वह इसलिए जर्मनी नहीं जा रहा है कि वह अपनी पत्नी से थक चुका है या उसे इस दुनिया में ऐनी मोर से कोई बेहतर महबूबा मिल जाये । कवि कहता है कि उसे एक न एक दिन तो मरना ही है तो वह झूटी मौत को देखने के लिए जा रहा है । क्योंकि उसे कभी भविष्य में अपने पत्नी के बिना जिंदगी जीना पड़े तो वह अपनी पत्नी के बिना कैसा महसूस करेंगा । जब तक वह अपने पत्नी से दूर है, वो मौत के बराबर ही होगा तो वह उसी मौत को देखने जा रहा है ।

Stanza-2

Yesternight the Sunne went hence,

And yet is here to day,

He hath no desire nor sense,

Nor halfe so short a way:

Then feare not mee,

But beleeve that I shall make

Speedier journeys, since I take

More wings and spurres then hee.

EXPLANATION: In the second stanza of this poem the poet says that Last Night the sun went down and yet he’s here again today. He’s got no desire or feeling, nor half as a short a life, so don't worry about me, but please believe I’ll make a quicker journeys because I’ve got more incentives than him.

"कल की रात सूरज हमलोगों के आंखों से ओझल हो चुका था और आज की सुबह हमारे सामने है । उसके पास न तो कोई इक्छा है, न ही समझ , फिर भी वो यात्रा करके वापस लौट आया । तो तुम मेरे बारे में सोच कर डरो मत बल्कि मुझ पर विश्वास करो कि मैं सूरज से भी तेज यात्रा कर तुम्हारे पास लौट आऊंगा।"

दूसरे छंद में फिर से कवि पत्नी को दिलासा दे रहा है । इस छंद में कवि अपनी पत्नी को सूरज का उदाहरण देते हुए समझाने की कोशिश करता है । कवि अपनी पत्नी से कहता है कि जिस प्रकार कल की शाम सूरज छुप गया था यानी सूरज अपने यात्रा पर गया था और आज की सुबह फिर से सूरज बाहर आ चुका है  यानी हमारे सामने है । सूरज के पास न तो कोई इक्छा है, न ही समझ, फिर भी वो यात्रा करके वापस लौट आया । ठीक उसी प्रकार कवि सूरज से भी तेज यात्रा करके अपनी पत्नी के पास लौट आयेगा ।   

Stanza-3

O how feeble is mans power,

That if good fortune fall,

Cannot adde another houre,

Nor a lost houre recall!

But come bad chance,

And wee joyne to it our strength,

And wee teach it art and length,

It selfe o'r us to advance

EXPLANATION: In the third stanza of this poem the poet says, "Oh how feeble man’s  power is, that if good luck happens we can't add another hour or recall a lost one. But when bad luck comes, we strengthen it, lengthen it and beautify it, so that it marches over us."

“ओह! इन्सान की शक्ति कितनी कमजोर है की अगर हमारे ज़िन्दगी में अच्छा समय हो तो उसमे न तो एक घंटा जोड़ सकते है और न ही बीते हुए लम्हे को वापस ला सकते है लेकिन जब बुरा समय आता है तो उसे सोच-सोच कर उसे मजबूत और लम्बा कर देते है मनो हम अपनी समस्याओं को विकसित करना सीखते है।“

जब कवि को मौत का एहसास होता है और सोचता है कि भविष्य में एक न एक दिन मारना ही है तो कवि को इन्सान की कमजोरी की याद आती है और कवि कहता है कि इन्सान की शक्ति इतनी कमजोर है कि अपने वास्तविक ख़ुशी में न तो एक घंटा जोड़ सकता है और न ही उस ख़ुशी के लम्हों को वापस ला सकता है जो अतीत में थी । लेकिन जब बुरा समय आता है तो इन्सान उसके बारे में ज्यादा सोचता है और उस बुरे समय को काफी मजबूत और लम्बा कर देता है मनो इन्सान अपनी ज़िन्दगी में यही सिखा हो की बुरे समय को लम्बा कैसे करें?

Stanza-4

When thou sigh'st, thou sigh'st not winde,

But sigh'st my soule away,

When thou weep'st, unkindly kinde,

My lifes blood doth decay.

It cannot bee

That thou lov'st mee, as thou say'st,

If in thine my life thou waste,

Thou art the best of mee.

EXPLANATION: In the fourth stanza of this poem the says to his beloved, "When you sigh, you don't sigh air, you sigh my soul away; when you weep, both kind and cruel, my life's blood the decays. It can't be true that you love me, like you say, if you, who is the better of me, lay waste my life in yours."

जब कवि जा रहा होता है तो उसकी महबूबा आहे भारती है, कवि को ऐसा लगता है जैसे की उसकी आत्मा बाहर आ रही हो, कवि के जाने पर उसकी महबूबा रो रही है, उसके आँखों से आंसू गिर रहे है, कवि को ऐसा लगता है जैसे कि वो आंसू नहीं, उसका खून बाहर आ रहा है । कवि अपने महबूबा को समझाने की कोशिश करता है कि वह आहे न भरे, न रोये, ऐसा करने से उसकी की ज़िन्दगी बर्बाद हो जाएगी क्योंकि उसकी महबूबा में ही उसकी ज़िन्दगी वास करती है, और ये कैसे हो सकता है की उसकी महबूबा उससे बहुत प्यार करती है जैसा की उसकी महबूबा कहती है, क्योंकि प्यार करने वाले कभी भी एक दुसरे को नुकसान नहीं पहुंचा सकते है। कवि की ज़िन्दगी में सबसे खुबसूरत चीज उसकी महबूबा ही है ।

Stanza-5

Let not thy divining heart

Fore thinke me any ill,

Destiny may take thy part,

And may thy feares fulfil;

But thinke that wee

Are but turn'd aside to sleepe;

They who one another keepe

Alive, ne'r parted bee.

EXPLANATION: In the last stanza of this poem the poet says that Don't let your prophetic heart foresee me ill in case destiny takes your place and fulfills your face fears; instead think of us as merely turned aside to sleep. Those who keep one another’s memory alive are never parted.

कविता के अंतिम छंद में में कवि अपने महबूबा से कहता है कि वह यह न सोचे कि उसके साथ कुछ बुरा होगा, या कवि वहाँ जाकर बीमार हो जायेगा या जख्मी हो जायेगा । अगर उसकी महबूबा ऐसा सोचती है तो वह उदास हो जाएगी । कवि कहता है अगर सोचना ही है तो कुछ अच्छा सोचों । कवि अपने पत्नी से कहता है कि वह और उसकी पत्नी बिस्तर पर सोये हुए है लेकिन दोनों एक दुसरे को नहीं देख पा रहे है लेकिन जैसे ही दोनों करवट लेते है, वे एक दुसरे को देख सकेंगे । कवि कहता है जो एक दुसरे से प्यार करता है वो कभी भी अलग नहीं हो सकता है, भले ही वे शारीरिक रूप से अलग हो सकते है लेकिन आध्यात्मिक रूप से कभी भी नहीं । वे हमेशा अपनी आत्मा से जुड़े रहते है।

He says to his beloved not to bemoan nor weeping because he will come back again in her life as the sun sets in the evening and rises in the morning.
